Is hypnosis meditation?

The answer is: No. I’ve been meditating for around 30 years, and using self-hypnosis for around the same period of time. The processes are completely dissimilar.
Hypnosis is focused attention
In essence, a state of hypnosis is focused attention. So you can be hypnotized for brief periods many times a day - when you’re engrossed in what you’re doing to the exclusion of everything else. I suspect that being in a “flow” state is a form of trance.
Meditation is being… “nothing special”
On the other hand, meditation is just being. Doing nothing, going nowhere, nothing happening except the present moment.
You’re relaxed, paying attention to your breathing, and your body, and your thoughts - but becoming caught up in nothing. Your thoughts come, and they go. Meditation has been described as the space between your thoughts. So since it’s not focused attention, it’s nothing like hypnosis.
However, if you’re interested in self-hypnosis as a self-development tool, then meditation is a real help. Over time, meditation will bring up all your issues - your subconscious programming which is affecting your life. While this may be uncomfortable, it’s necessary, and ultimately frees you.
